Clinical Analysis in the Surgical Geriatric Patients, Over 65 Years of Age

Abstract
|
|
|
An analysis was made of the records of 528 patients over 65 years of age in the Surgical Depatment at the EWHA Woman University Hospital from January, 1987 through December, 1993 for 7 years.
@ES The results were as followings;
@EN 1) Whole admitted surgical patients during 7 years were 8,381 and surgical patients over 65 years of age during the same period were 528 patients, occupying 6.3% of surgical patients.
2) The sex ratio of male to female was 1:0.8.
3) According to the disease analysis, malignant diseases occupied 25.5% of total diseases and the most frequent disease was stomach cancer, and the most frequent benign disease was appendicitis (14.6%).
4) There were one or more coexistent disease in 186 patients (35.2%).
5) Operation was performed in 528 patients.
6) Duration of anesthesia was 1-3hours in most cases, and the postoperative complication was increased according to the anesthesia time.
7) Postoperative complications were occurred in 87 cases. Wound complication was the most common in 27 cases (31.0%).
8) Operation types were classified as elective operation (386 cases), emergency operation (142 cases).
9) Postoperative mortality rate was 1.3% (7 cases) in this report.
